About Us

Proudly Serving Our Customers Since 1930.

Our History

The D & J Campbell story began in 1930.

Our story began in 1930, when Ian’s Great Uncle Donald, a coal merchant, started delivering coal by horse and cart with Donald’s Brother, Ian’s Grandfather, Neil Campbell, working alongside him. In those early days, deliveries were carried out using a horse and cart, a far cry from the modern transport operation we run today.

Then in 1953 and 1954, Ian’s Grandfather, Neil Campbell established the business with Ian’s Uncle, Donnie Campbell joining him in 1955. Sadly, Neil died suddenly in December 1962. Ian’s Dad, James Neil Campbell then joined the business in 1963. From here the business operated as D & J Campbell.

In Memory

An Epitaph to Neil Campbell

As darkening shadows fill the sky
As homeward I did ramble
By fading light
I’ll try to write an epitaph to Neil Campbell

No more his canny voice we hear
No more our errands run
Departed from us all we fear
For his good work is done

No task too small
His word not harsh nor rude
He set a pattern to us all
To live the way we should

He helped the rich, he helped the poor
Of his help you could be sure
He helped the lame dog o’er the style
And he did it with a smile

To those who follow in his trade
Let not your hearts be troubled
Take the path he made though a debt he paid
And may your span be doubled

Keep to the end and a help aye lend
As through this world you amble
By going this way then a tribute pay
To the memory of Neil Campbell

The business continued under the management of Neil’s sons, Donnie and James Campbell, who carried forward the family tradition and helped establish the foundations for future generations.

In 2005, following Donnie’s retirement, Ian James Campbell, son of the late James and Isobel Campbell, joined the business. With Ian’s young blood and enthusiasm, the business started to pick up momentum with the guidance of Ian’s Mum and Dad, James and Isobel Campbell. James and Isobel had a huge influence in the business right up until they died. James died on the 12th December 2022 and very sadly not long after this, Ian’s Mum Isobel died on the 6th November 2023, less than a year later.

Under Ian’s leadership, D & J Campbell Ltd has continued to thrive, developing its operations while retaining the family values and commitment to service on which it was founded.

From humble beginnings nearly a century ago to the demands of today’s transport industry, our journey reflects generations of dedication, hard work and a determination to keep moving forward.
